‘Jheronimus vliegt uit’
Als afsluiting van een lange reis langs de steden waar ooit de ‘Tuin der Lusten’ van Jheronimus Bosch vertoefde keren de gevleugelde luchtschepen van Sjon Brands terug naar Nederland. Na de geslaagde grote tentoonstelling in het prachtige ‘Museo Lázaro Galdiano’ in Madrid zijn zij ruim twee maanden te bewonderen in het ‘Jheronimus Bosch Art Center’ in ’s-Hertogenbosch. |
‘Hieronymus flies out’
At the end of a long journey past the cities where Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’ once resided, Sjon Brands’ winged airships return to the Netherlands. After the successful major exhibition in the beautiful ‘Museo Lázaro Galdiano’ in Madrid, they can be admired for more than two months in the ‘Jheronimus Bosch Art Center’ in ’s-Hertogenbosch. |
Kathedralen van een op hol geslagen fantasie
De tentoonstelling ‘Jheronimus vliegt uit!’ verwelkomt vijf gevederde “kathedralen van een op hol geslagen fantasie”, beelden die onmiskenbaar doen denken aan het werk van Bosch. “Dat gevoel voor het verhalende valt samen met Bosch”, zegt Amparo Lopéz, conservator van het ‘Museo Lázaro Galdiano’, “in beide gevallen tonen zich verhalen die de kijker al spelend kan voltooien, iets wat zeer karakteristiek is voor moderne kunst”. Sergio Fanjul in ‘El País’: “Zijn fantasiebeelden zijn onuitputtelijk, vol met kleine hoekjes en tafereeltjes, zoals begrafenissen, fanfares, mensen die dode bomen dragen, Romeo en Julia in eigen persoon en zelfs actuele verwijzingen, zoals de onverschilligheid van de Europese Unie ten aanzien van Syrische vluchtelingen”. |
Cathedrals of a runaway imagination
The exhibition ‘Jheronimus flies out!’ welcomes five feathered “cathedrals of a runaway imagination”, images that are unmistakably reminiscent of Bosch’s work. “That sense of the narrative coincides with Bosch,” says Amparo Lopéz, curator of the ‘Museo Lázaro Galdiano’, “in both cases there are stories that the viewer can complete while playing, something that is very characteristic of modern art.” Sergio Fanjul in ‘El País’: “His fantasy images are inexhaustible, full of little corners and scenes, such as funerals, brass bands, people carrying dead trees, Romeo and Juliet in person and even current references, such as the indifference of the European Union regarding Syrian refugees”. |

De uit Tilburg afkomstige kunstenaar is erg ingenomen met deze tentoonstelling op vaderlandse bodem: “Mijn werk is best wel on-Nederlands absurd, bont en barok, iets wat wij misschien wat minder gewend zijn van kunst. Maar ik hou van het onverwachte, het onbedachte, van al onze onvolkomenheden en ondeugden, van humor dus. Net als Jheronimus Bosch. Of Kurt Schwitters. Al doende laat ik me spelenderwijs inspireren door allerlei gevonden gebruiksvoorwerpen, door mooie (afval-) materialen, hun vormen, kleuren en verhoudingen. En door het onbestemde toeval dat altijd om de hoek komt kijken. Het is een groot voorrecht ‘kunstenaar’ te mogen zijn”. |

The artist from Tilburg is very pleased with this exhibition on Dutch soil: “My work is quite un-Dutch absurd, colorful and baroque, something we are perhaps less used to in art. But I love the unexpected, the thoughtless, all our imperfections and vices, that is, humor. Just like Hieronymus Bosch. Or Kurt Schwitters. In doing so, I am playfully inspired by all kinds of found utensils, by beautiful (waste) materials, their shapes, colors and proportions. And by the indeterminate coincidence that always comes into play. It is a great privilege to be an ‘artist’.” |

De tentoonstelling wordt geopend op zondag 30 oktober 2016 om 11.00 uur, opgeluisterd door een concert van de fameuze ‘New Royal Flaminga Band’ (Martin Fondse, Eric van der Westen, Mete Erker en Jan Wirken) en een lezing van Eric de Bruyn: ‘De vergeten beeldentaal van Jheronimus Bosch’. |

The exhibition will open on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at 11 a.m., enlivened by a concert by the famous ‘New Royal Flaminga Band’ (Martin Fondse, Eric van der Westen, Mete Erker and Jan Wirken) and a lecture by Eric de Bruyn: ‘The forgotten imagery of Hieronymus Bosch’.
